Dear
Dear Lan,
Here is my feedback.
About courses in SMU:
When we were in SMU, we took some lectures and courses. All the lectures related to medical fields and management. They were interesting and we could communicate with the professors. We gained a lot. So I suggest keep these lectures.
About the courses. In SMU, we have four courses:operational management, accounting, finance and financial analysis. For me, financial analysis involves a lot of groupwork, we have a lot of work to do every day during the course, but through the group study, I learnt a lot. Not only financial knowledge, but also communication skills and cooperative skills, which I think it's very useful for my future study in ISCTE-IUL. So I suggest other course can also involve some group work, not just individual one, it can be group discussion, group project etc.
About the reset and change of courses. To my point of view, I think in SMU, we should take more general courses to help the students have an overview of management, because most of us don't have management background. For example, like general management, economy and so on. These can help students have a better understanding of what management is. And help them make preparation for the deeper and further study in ISCTE-IUL.
I'm from HRM, here I can recommend some books which I think there are good :
1.Shaun Tyson, Essentials of Human Resource Management, fifth edition.
This book related to the behavioural bases of HRM, the developing strategic role of HRM, recruitment and selection.....
This book can help you understand what HRM is.
2.Adrian Wilkinson & Tom Redman(2006,), Contempory Human Resource Management: Text and Cases, Ashford Colour Press, Gosport.
This is a very good one. Involved the main part of HRM, like performance appraisal, career management and reward management, with a lot of cases.
3.(1)Angela Wright. Reward Management in Context Chartered Institute of Personal and Development.
This book concentrates on reward management, one of the most important part in HRM.
4.The Oxford Handbook of Human Resource Management. Specific one, with a lot of details and illustrations.
5. Edited by Susan Cartwright, Cary,l Cooper, The Oxford Handbook of Personal Psychology, Psychology has a closed relationship with HRM,
so it is better to know something about Psychology.
Best regards
Lynn
