Southern Medical University, the former First Military Medical University, was founded in 1951. As early as 1979, it was a leading university in China. In August 2004, the University was renamed Southern Medical University and was committed to developing into a medical multiversity. Located in Guangzhou, a historical and cultural city with an advanced economy, it is a first-class university with landscape style in Guangdong Province. Its disciplines consist of eight fields, i.e. medicine, engineering, science, law, management science, literature, education and economics. The University has a large number of national key disciplines, key disciplines of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the national Clinical Pharmacology Center, and the national Traditional Chinese Medicine Pharmacology Center. Moreover, leading disciplinary groups have been formed in such fields as medical, the combination of science, engineering and medicine, the combination of traditional Chinese medicine and western medicine, tropical medicine, biological high-tech. Now the University serves 13,000 full-time students, including 3,000 postgraduates.
A large number of famed scholars and experts with domestic and international influences work in Southern Medical University, including 2 academicians from Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering, 3 chief scientists from the national “973” project and over 600 postgraduate tutors. The University has a perfect set of infrastructure and a good teaching environment with information technology. It has 7 large affiliated hospitals, among which 6 hospitals belong to the grade-A hospitals. Besides, it has nearly 100 teaching hospitals with relatively larger scale and good quality.
