Precautions for Going to the U.S. for Studies

[From:   Author:  Time:2012-08-29 15:04:17]

  1. Your papers

Carry your passport, ticket, ID Card and other papers with you so that they are easily available for transit customs inspections, and don’t keep them in your suitcase.

  2. Your luggage

2.1 Since specifications on luggage by different airlines may differ from one another, you can visit their websites for detailed information.

2.2 You can choose to carry what daily necessities you need, like razors, skin care products, cosmetics, sun hats, sun glasses, sunscreen, umbrellas, watches, pens, and small notebooks. It is advised to have a suitcase for items not to be frequently used, and a bag for commonly used items. You can also have your own trunks, but the consignment is to be paid by yourself.

  3. Your electrical articles

Since the common voltage in the United States is 110, please check your mobile phone charger and other articles to make sure they are of this voltage, and buy a 110-220 voltage converter if necessary. In addition, the sockets used in the United States are different from those in China, and Chinese electrical plugs will not fit in directly, and so it is advised that you should buy an American standard plug convert in advance, in markets or on line.

Although you can have wireless internet access in the United States, we do not advise you to take along your laptop, for it has to undergo special inspections on every flight, and may easily be lost or damaged.

  4. Your credit card

Since there have been more and more Chinese visitors to the United States in recent years, in most major shops there you can use your Union-pay cards (as are indicated on the surface of the cards)。 Still, those of you who plan to make bulk purchases had better get a MASTER or VISA credit card of your own. It is not a good idea to use your parents’, for it may not be allowed or get the credit rating it otherwise deserves. As it takes time to apply for a MASTER or VISA credit card, you may contact a bank as soon as possible if you need one.

  Your telephone card

You can telephone the Manufacturer and ask about your phone standard to make sure it can be used in the United States; and consult the Operators as to the use of your phone number in the U.S. and relevant fees. Since we are not very helpful in this respect, please do make sure that your phone can be used, and our advice is for you to apply for a U.S. roaming service to ensure a smoother communication.

  6. The cash you carry

Since RMB is not in circulation in the United States, please exchange your RMB into American dollars beforehand, and for detailed information, please contact banks. A Chinese is allowed to carry as much as 5000 American dollars (or the same worth of other currencies) in cash for out-bound travels. Any amount exceeding that, or valuables worth over 5000 RMB yuan apiece, will have to be declared to the customs. For a dishonest or inaccurate declaration, your entry into the United States may not be allowed, and you may even be fined or detained as a punishment.

And our advice is for you to carry 300 to 500 American dollars in cash for personal consumption or urgent uses.

  7. Your entry procedures

Please make sure your passport, invitation letter, copies of the return ticket, Entry Card and university certificate for the Summer Camp are all in place before departure, and give honest answers to questions from local immigration officers when undergoing their inspections. If you have any difficulties in answering questions from American immigration officers, you can turn to your tour guide for help.

Note: Please do take good care of your Entry Card issued by the customs after entering the United States!

  8. The customs

The customs inspections in the United States are very strict. Besides fruits, meat, soil, plants, animals and other banned articles, you are forbidden to carry piracies, and even if it is lawful works, like books, videos, computer software and artistic products, it may be best to carry only one copy of each.

  9. American whether

It is hotter in summer daytime in the northeastern United States but cooler in the early morning and at night, so a thin coat is needed; in spring and autumn, the climate is mild, which is similar to that in China. Take New York as an example.

  10. Prepare programs

Students need to prepare some programs like art, language or knowledge of study tour according to their own expertise. The more, the better. In that way our journey will be full of happiness.

  11. Hotel

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Law, hotels do not provide slippers, pajamas, toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo and shower gel, so please bring your own toiletries. In the hotel, please keep quiet and do not make noise. In general, two persons share a room. If you want to go out, be sure to leave the key at the reception desk, so that your roommate can use it. Do not take any items in the room. If you want to keep something as a souvenir, buy it from the hotel. Pay the entire fees for private telephone calls, beverage, laundry, etc at the reception desk when you check out.

  12. Medicine

According to personal situation, bring some outdoor ordinary medicine by yourself, such as vitamins, cold medicine, gastrointestinal medicine, motion sickness pills, painkillers, band-aids, anti-inflammatory drugs. If you suffer high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes or other diseases, make sure to bring adequate medicine and carry it with you anytime according to your own situation.

  13. Liquid items

For liquid items (including cosmetics) you carry, each volume shall not exceed 100 milliliters (ml)。 The container of the liquid items should be placed in a transparent plastic bag with a maximum capacity of 1 liter (L) that can be resealed. Every passenger is only allowed to carry a transparent plastic bag and the extra one(s) should be checked. For patients with diabetes or other diseases, their necessary liquid medicine (with a doctor's prescription or proof) with proper quantity should be confirmed by the security check for safety. Moreover, cosmetics over 100ml are not allowed to carry on the plane.

  14. Shopping in America

If you intend to buy something in the United States and bring it to China, please see the relevant provisions of the Customs and Excise Department in order to avoid bringing items that are prohibited to carry or taxed by the Customs when you enter China.
