Good morning. So greetings, fellow students, family and friends, faculty and staff members. It is an honor to stand before you at this moment that marks the start of a new chapter in our lives, as a student new to the profession, and new to the university. My name is Bob Li. I’d like to share with you my personal reasons for choosing to study here.
I received my bachelor's degree in medicine 2 months ago. I knew for sure I would go to one of the medical schools because they were the only ones I applied for. Why? You may ask, but it was beyond me either. It wasn’t until my clinical year that the long hidden answer emerged from blood, sweat, and tears: all I ever wanted was to help other people.
As an intern, I had many hands-on opportunities to real time patient care. In the meantime I sent and retrieved lab results, filed and archived case records, broke and fixed laser printers. I lifted wheelchairs from other departments, I even yelled at IT guys who solved problems by creating more. Among other things, these were the part I enjoyed doing, for I ended up helping somebody, be it my patient or my supervisor. Having said that, I was aware that help of this kind was limited in scale and cost too much effort. From time to time I felt most of the hassles need to disappear. A couple of dozen more things were less enjoyable, say having to tell a patient that he needed to have a test redone because the machine messed up, for the second time. They need to disappear as well. I figured that I could help more people by overcoming obstacles to efficient healthcare delivery, hence the need to take a step back from day-to-day clinical work and look at the problems from a managerial perspective. For example, instead of returning to the computer again and again to check the CT images of one patient, I'd be better off building a system which can automatically report critical results and follow up responses after that.
I am lucky enough to have found out about this program, and better yet, admitted to it. Now I have a chance to learn to help more people the way I prefer. I want to give a big shout-out to Southern Medical University and ISCTE-IUL for making this program possible. Together we are going to make some wonderful explorations. Let’s hope for the best. Thank you.
