Exchange clinical internship

Back

In May, 2012, two universities signed Agreement on Exchange Students and agree to annually receive 4 clinical students to take the internship in the hospitals of each university for their academic year of in-hospital practical. For UW/H students, the exchange period shall occur during their 6th year of medical education within the year of in-hospital practical training (“Praktisches Jahr”). For SMU students shall be recruited from the Bachelor-to-Doctor program (during their 6th-7th academic year).

SMU offers two clinical specialties for practical training to UW/H exchange students and vice versa. These specialties are selected from

Internal Medicine with sub-specialties in

i) Gastroenterology,

ii) Nephrology,

iii) Cardiology and

iv) Pulmonology.

Sub-terms of two weeks can be offered by the SMU’s School of Traditional Chinese Medicine in terms of providing specialized introductory classes in the field to UW/H students.

Surgery with its subspecialties

i) Trauma/Orthopedics and

ii) General Surgery

Students are hosted by a student mentor, preferentially by those who actively participate in this program and who will also be spending time at the partner university with the overall aim to build up student tandems.

In the end of 2012, this exchange program was selected as one of “International Exchange Project for Elite Undergraduates” held by China Scholarship Council (CSC), which means every year there would be four SMU students having opportunity to do their clerkship in Germany with the financial support of the State Government.

In February, 2013, Ms. Fiona Blanchaud, who was a M.D candidate of UWH, came to China as the first exchange student between two universities and conducted her clerkship in Nanfang Hospital, SMU for 8 weeks.

In June, the same year, Ms. Wu Zhenzhen(Jane) and Mr. Luo Yuqiang (Kemen) , two SMU students of Bachelor-to-Doctor program also realized their dream of taking internship in Germany as first batch SMU-UWH exchange students.

At the present, two universities have successfully conducted 9 batch exchanges. More than 15 clinical students of both countries obtained the overseas medical experience through this program. Among them, there are 7 SMU students sponsored by CSC.
