As an important institution affiliated to School of Traditional Chinese Medicine (abbreviated as School of TCM), SMU, Molecular Biology Laboratory at School of Chinese Medicine is the Level-III Laboratory under State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine of the People’s Republic of China, the Research Center for both National Key Discipline of Clinic Integrating Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine and Ginagdong Provincial 211 Key Discipline Construction Project, as well as the national base for High-level Talent Education in the field of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) as a primary discipline for doctorate degree. The laboratory not only aims at studying the essential characteristics of traditional Chinese medical syndromes by adopting methods of Molecular and Cellular Biology, but also attempts to analyze therapeutic mechanism of traditional Chinese medicine multi-targetedly. Thus, it has been serving as the common research platform for the school of TCM and simultaneously the main research base in the field of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) as a primary discipline entitling post-doc, doctorate degree and master’s degree.

In this laboratory, platforms applying the Molecular Cloning Techniques and the methods and technologies for Gene and Protein Function have been established, Research teqniques such as tumors in vivo Imaging and Gene function targeted TCM have been developed, Laboratory such as Routing Pathological Testing,Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), One-dimensional Electrophoresis as well as Two-dimensional Electrophoresis, Laboratory for TCM Pharmacy, Laboratory for Cell Culture, Exactitude Apparatuses Room, et cetera.Molecular Biology Laboratory has achieved various academic attainments in hepatofibrosis, adiposis hepatica and liver-depression syndrome, has been maintained the leadership in the study of Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma (NPC)and Colorectal Carcinoma in the research field of TCM and has been leading the way of preventing and Treating Atherosclerosis by use of Traditional Chinese Medicine.The Lab has its own research characteristics and technical superiority and has been regarded as the main base for TCM research and technological innovation.

Research Oriention

(1) Technological Application of Molecular Cloning: establishment of cell lines or Cell Strains Stably Expressing Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) for colon cancer, hepatic cancer and Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma (NPC) by applying Gene Cloning and Resistance Gene Screening Technique;

(2) Research technology in Gene and Protein Function: Study the effect of GNB3 Gene and polymorphism of ABCA1 Gene on Coronary Atherosclerotic Heart Disease (CAHD) with Syndrom of Phlegm Stasis by applying Techniques of Nucleic Acid Isolation and Electrophoretic Mobility Shift AssayEMSAas well as coronaryangiography (CAG). Establish the DNA Sample Bank and Clinic Data Bank for patients with diabetic nephropathy by application of Real-time quantitative PCR;

(3) Proteomics Technology: Study the Proteomics of liver-depression syndrome by applying Two-dimensional Electrophoresis and DIGE technique to explore the related protein expression, the histone modifications and the regularity of its functional change and simultaneously establish the corresponding data bank to further explain the mechanism of liver depression and discover signal regulation that shows the participation of the transthyretin (TTR) in liver depression.

Research Focus

◆ With classical formula of Traditional Chinese Medicine being our research object, we study the pharmacology and pharmacodynamic of the effective classical formula by application of means in Molecular Biology, Cytology and zoology.

◆ Our research priorities lie in the study of the pharmacology and pharmacodynamic of Traditional Chinese medicine in their effect of anti-tumor and anti0depression.

Research Group

There are 2 professors (research fellow), 3 associated professors (research Associate) and 1 lecturer; 4 of the staff have got PhD degree, 1 Master degree; 2 of the staff are PhD supervisors and 1 supervisor for Master students and 2 laboratory assistants. Since 2012, 15 PhD students and 28 Master students have graduated from our lab.

Scientific study

◆ Project undertaken

Since 2012, our lab has been granted 1 Key Proiect, 4 General Projects and 1 Youth Project Funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and has taken charge of various provincial and ministerial academic programs. The total amount of fund has already exceeded 6 million.

◆ Research accomplishments

Since 2012, more than 20 SCI essays with our staff being the first author or corresponding author have been published and over 80 essays have been published in Chinese Core Journals. 5 Science and technological prized have been granted.

Academic exchange home and abroad

◆ Since 2006, experts from home and abroad have been invited to our lab to give lectures (more than 30 person-times) and many members of our lab have been to attend more than 10 different international conference (more than 50 person-times) and experts from our lab have been invited to give reports at seminal international conferences (16 person-times) . We have established good cooperation with countries like UK and USA and have made some important and innovative achievements.

◆ Our lab successfully hosted 2 National Academic Conferences such as The first conference of “The Annual Conference of Basic Discipline of Chinese and Western Medicine”, which greatly enhanced our international influence.
