Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Microcirculation in Medical Shock

Back

General Description

Key Lab for Medical Shock Microcirculation Research of Guangdong is relied on Southern Medical University. The lab was hailed as Shock and Microcirculation Research Lab of People’s Liberation Army by Chief Logistic Department in 1984 (there is no title as key lab at that time) and the first batch of key laboratories of PLA in 1993, renamed as “PLA Shock Micro-circulation Key Laboratory.” In 2000, the lab became one of “Critically Important Medical Laboratories of PLA”. After Southern Medical University was transferred to Guangdong Provincial government, the lab was classified as “Key Lab for Medical Shock Microcirculation Research of Guangdong” by Guangdong Provincial Department of Science and Technology. The area for scientific research is 2600 square meters and the experimental equipment in the lab is worth 12 million yuan. There are 21 fixed faculty and staff in the lab, including 5 academic supervisors and 16 other staff. The lab is relied on department of pathophysiology, School of Medical Sciences, Southern Medical University. Pathophysiology of SMU is the National Key Nurturing Specialty, Key Supporting Object of Guangdong 211 Project and approved institution to recruit creative scientific research team by Guangdong province. There are 21 faculty and staff in the lab, including 8 professors, 3 associate professors and 10 intermediate professional title personnel. The area for scientific research is 2600 square meters and the experimental equipment in the lab is worth 12 million yuan. A molecular biology experimental system was establishedcharacterized by antibody gene bank and virus carrier construction, a cell biology research methodology was proposed featured with confocal microscopic observation and flow cytometry detecting system, a microcirculation observing system was constructed on ApoE gene knockout rat, thermal injury and traumatic animal model, and a protein expression and purifying system by antibody testing workshop was set up as well, all of which could provide support for all researches and tasks.

Research

Research Projects

From 2011 to 2014, 42 research projects at various levels have beenundertaken, including 17 state-level projects, the funds of which is 60% of all research funds, which has shown a strong competition of SMU.

Research Accomplishments

22 SCI papers have been published with the lab as the first author affiliation. One First Prize of Guangdong Science and Technology was awarded to the lab.

Academic Exchanges

Open Research Projects and Visiting Scholar Fund

With the belief in opening up and serving society, 10 research fellows from Guangzhou Military General Hospital, Shenzhen University Medical School, Nanfang Hospital, Zhujiang Hospital and The Third Affiliated Hospital of SMU do research work in our lab, and have published 19 SCI papers, contributing greatly to the medical research in Guangdong province. The joint research team with Guangzhou Military General Hospital applied “Mechanism of blood vessel endothelium injury in Severe Heat Stroke” which was sponsored by Guangdong Department of Science and Technology. In association with emergency department of Nanfang Hospital, joint research on the clinical application of polydatin was implemented. And in association with the Department of Digestion , Prof. Guo Wen studied immunity modulation by herbal medicine and prevention of colorectal cancer, and published 2 SCI papers.

Mutual Visits

Guo Xiaohua (2011.01-2012.09) and Song Rui (2011.06-present), both youngsters, went to US for post-doctoral research. Guo Xiaohua has won National Natural Science Youth Fund and several funds at provincial and ministerial level. Song published high level papers on ATVB, and has won National Natural Science Youth Fund. Sponsored by German BMBF international bureau, Sino-German project with Prof. Maegele M from Witten-Herdecke University, “Microcirculation Characteristics and Treatment Strategy of Brain Injury and Hemorrhagic Shock Combined Injury” was successfully carried out. Based on mutual visits, Dr. Mutschler M worked in our lab for 2 months, and Mr. Chen Bo went to Germany for quite some time. Coauthored SCI paper was published on Scand J Trauma Resusc Emerg Med. Prof. Ulf Brunk from Swede Linkopin University Department of Pathology was recruited as visiting professor of SMU. He did scientific research in our department regularly, and coauthored 5 SCI papers. His post-doctoral candidate Tino Kurs studied in our department for a month.

The introduction of innovative scientific team. Initiated by our department, “Original Anti-inflammatory Drug Development Team” was beneficiated by Guangdong Organizing Department Talents Office. This program was headed by Prof. Rikard Holmdahl (from Swede Karolinska Institutet, gainer of Descartes Prize for Science Communication, the highest scientific award in European Union), and co-supported by 8 professors from renowned universities such as Copenhagen University, Einstein University, etc. Three I class national new drugs, heumatoid arthritis vaccine, atherosclerosis antibody and sepsis conditioning element were developed in our lab.

Academic Conferences

One international academic conference was held in our department. “11th International Conference on Genetic Modification Technology” was hosted by our department in 2013. Prof. Lluis Montoliu (academician of Span Academy of Science and Technology, chairman of International Genetic Modification Technology Association), Prof. Allan Bradley (chief scientist of Wellcome Trust Sanger Research Institute), Prof. Liu Peide (academician, former vice president of Chinese Academy of Engineering, former president of Peking Union Medical College) and more than 300 representatives attended the conference.
