Formerly the First Medical College of the People’s Liberty Army, Southern Medical University (SMU) was established in 1952. In 1979, it became one of the national key universities; in August, 2004 it changed its name into Southern Medical University and strived to build itself into a multi-disciplinary medical university. Situated in Guangzhou, an economic hub and historic cultural center, the university is a First Class Garden School in Guangdong. Its disciplines cover medicine, engineering, science, law, management, literature, education and economics. It also abounds with state-level key disciplines and those in the National Administration of Traditional Medicine, as well as state-level clinical pharmacology base and traditional Chinese medicine pharmacology base. Centering round the medical science, an advantageous disciplinary cluster has been formed, as represented by the integration of science and medicine and western and traditional medicine, tropical medicine, and bio-technology. The university now has 13,000 full time students among which 3,000 are doctoral and postgraduate students.
SMU contends with a teaching stuff of high quality, with a great many influential scholars and experts, 2 academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 3 chief scientists from the National “973” Project, and 600 plus doctoral and postgraduate advisors. The university has perfect teaching facilities which ensure a good digital teaching environment. Among the 7 large affiliated hospitals of the university, 6 belong to the “Third Best Hospitals”. Besides, there are about 100 teaching hospitals with relatively large scale and high teaching performance, so it enjoys plenty of resources for teaching practices and students’ employment. The university maintains frequent academic exchanges, employing more than 100 famous experts and scientists as honorary professors. In addition, it has established stable relationships of academic exchange and scientific and research cooperation with universities and institutions in more than 30 countries and regions such as America, England, Japan, France, Australia and Hong Kong.

Under the instruction of the strategy of the “Multidisciplinary Medical University”, the School of Humanities and Management in SMU was established as a result of the integration of departments of economics, the science of health law, and fine arts in the former School of Arts and Social Science and the department of the health management in the former School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. The School of Humanities and Management is constituted by the Department of Law, the Department of Economics, the Department of Health Service Management, the Department of Fine Arts, the Institute of Public Health Policy and the International Academy of the Science of Health Law. Now the School has formed a complete educational and teaching system with undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD programs. There are 6 programs or specialties in the field of law, economics, and management.
The School has a teaching stuff of more than 40 full-time talents, among which 10 are professors and associate professors, 1 doctoral advisor, 8 postgraduate advisors, 5 elite teachers in the whole army, 2 elite teachers in the General Logistics Department, 1 expert entitled to the special governmental subsidy provided by the State Council. Characterized by the integration of disciplines and specialties, the School is committed to cultivating versatile and innovative talents with integrated knowledge of medicine and law, economics and management. The School can confer postgraduate degree in Social Medicine and Health Service Management and has begun to enroll Public Health Policy PhD students. Besides, it has launched the 1+1 postgraduate program in Medicine and Health Management with FIU Business School and the PhD program in Medicine and Health Management with the College of Business Administration of the University of Lisbon.
